| What am I up to?
I am about to embark on a dissertation project to explore the sociopolitical function of Bangkok’s shopping district Siam/Ratachaprasong as well as the everyday practices consumers are employing to reclaim an urban public space. In 2009 I received my master’s degree in "International Studies" from the University of Leeds. My thesis on green party building in the Philippines was informed by field work in Manila and Cagayan de Oro and formed the basis of a workshop at the "2nd Congress of the Asia Pacific Greens Network" in Taipei. In 2008 I got my undergraduate degree from the Seminar of Southeast Asian Studies at Humboldt University in Berlin. My BA-thesis discussed the respective influence of kingship in Thailand and Spain on democratization in comparative perspective. It is based on experiences and field work during a semester abroad at Thammasat University in Bangkok. Before studying I worked as a journalist.
Why Southeast Asia?
I backpacked Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia before taking up my studies and became interested in further exploring the many fascinating cultural, historical and political facets of the region, among them the diversity of coexisting political systems – from one-party communist states over military dictatorships, absolute and constitutional monarchies, guided and oligarchic democracies, to a seemingly consolidating democracy in a largely Muslim country.
